As the world moves closer to "opening back up" you may be tempted to "return to normal". Yes, where we are now is uncomfortable, and many will want to feel normal and comfortable again. To get back to our routine and not to have to worry about getting a job or how to pay our bills. To be able to get out of the house and just go to work and do whatever we wanted to. This call to be comfortable is strong. Some are feeling useless, some are feeling creative in different ways. But we are all feeling vulnerable like never before and some are even feeling traumatised by what has transpired on our planet in recent weeks.
What we know and have seen recently is that with less traffic on the roads the haze hanging over our major cities has disappeared, we are breathing cleaner air. There are reports that I have seen about birds are heard chirping in the middle of New York, wild goats are roaming the streets of villages in Wales, Coyotes are seen wandering on the Golden Gate Bridge, whale sharks along our reefs and leatherback turtles on beaches hatching from the sand have been spotted in greater numbers than ever before, the Venetian canals have cleared to reveal jellyfish thriving in the clear waters, we can even see the Himalayas for the first time in decades. All this in a few short weeks. We have all gotten a glimpse of what our world would look like if we took better care of it. If our "normal" wasn't so devastating to our environment.
We are not a bad race of people or even a "cancer" on this planet, who don't care about our environment or who don't wish to fix it. The numerous social media pages and videos dedicated to the cuteness of animals is a testament to that. There is even a growing movement towards veganism so that we lessen the impact on the environment. The system of what was our "normal" has made us time poor and in the light of that, we reach for what is convenient. It's simple, we are too busy and when we do have time, we fall in a heap or fall asleep. This makes it easy for us to not see the devastation around us when we have so little time on our hands to do anything about it... until now.
Miraculously, the whole world has stopped and what is happening is incredible! It's a wake up call from Mother Gai'ha, sending us humans a very clear message. We just had a tremendous gift drop in our laps so that we can see the beautiful, albeit painful truth of what we have been creating around us. It's like someone has pulled back the veil of illusion of the lives we have been living and the devastation outside our window is clear to see. In the light of this global event, that which has been lurking in the shadows of our lifestyles can be seen clearly by everyone. It's painful to acknowledge, what we have created around us.
We can see a system that is broken and does not serve us any longer. Economies brought to their knees so easily. Hospitals that are stretched beyond their limits, those who need medical care the most cannot afford it, homeless dead in the streets and there is more to come. Don't for a moment think that this is the end of the devastation. The rest of the dominoes still need to fall and the fall out in the less developed countries hasn't begun yet. This was our "normal", do you wish to return to "normal? Or do you wish to find a new normal, new systems with different thinking that create business that are responsible and ethical, life sustaining systems, a world where resources are shared more equally, where indifference is not the mainstream, where there is more compassionate leadership and we are living in harmony with our planet?
We have a say and we have the ability to create the changes in our world so that it begins to reflect the kind of world we wish to live in. We can begin to create the changes in our own homes to begin with and we can stop buying products from businesses that are not ethical, sending them a strong message to change their ways or go out of business. We can change our thinking and stop creating devastation around us and become more harmonious. We can start to feel good about ourselves again, knowing we are changing our world for the better and the kind of legacy we will be leaving our grandchildren will make them proud of us. This is our once in a life time chance, make it count. Don't go back to normal!
Happy Earth Day 2020!
